Most small business owners are aware of the growing popularity of mobile devices. More than half of adults in the United States own a smartphone or tablet, and that figure is only expected to increase in the coming years. Advertisers know that they need to embrace mobile marketing solutions, but the real question is how they should implement these initiatives.

In an article on the website Mobile Marketing Watch, industry professional Michael Essany wrote that small businesses should do the following to improve their mobile presence:

  1. Identify and understand your audience – Mobile technology is used by people of all age groups from various economic backgrounds. You will need to narrow down you audience by the devices they prefer, and determine how they use them.
  2. Learn how to reach your audience –  "Research when the best time of day to reach out to your audience is," Essany wrote. "Shoving content in someone's face right when they are at their busiest is never a good plan."
  3. Develop the right content – After figuring out who your potential customers are and how you can reach them effectively, you'll will need to create targeted content. What you produce needs to be relevant to your audience, but it should also promote your business at the same time.
  4. Understand the pros and cons in investing in an app – Many small businesses seem to have a mobile application these days, but they're not for everyone. Your potential customers want something useful, not just a another item taking up space on their phones. If you're considering creating an app, be sure that you know the value in such an undertaking.
