I’m very proud to say that just a couple weeks ago I got married. We took pictures, we went to a church, and we danced afterwards; we did everything you might expect during a usual wedding. But there was one thing that added a little bit of flare to our special day. At our wedding reception, we had our very own On-Demand Snapchat Geofilter.

What is a Snapchat Geofilter

Geofilters are creative designs that people, businesses, or communities can create and submit through Snapchat to promote events or locations. Once you’ve taken your snap, simply swipe to the left and you’ll begin to pull up all filters available in your area.

Snapchat categorizes Geofilters into two categories:

Community: Artists and designers are encouraged to create and submit a free Community Geofilter for their city, university, a local landmark, or another public location.

On-Demand: Businesses and individuals alike can purchase On-Demand Geofilters for their event, business, or a specific location. Brand logos and trademarks are permitted.

Where to use a Snapchat Geofilter

Because Snapchat is one of the fastest growing and most popular social sharing platforms, using a Geofilter is an easy way to let people naturally spread the word about an event. I wanted everyone to know about my wedding, so I created a filter that anyone who attended our reception could use.

Setting up a Geofilter

If you’re looking to create a unique Geofilter specific for your event or business, you will have to design your own. Snapchat offers templates that you can purchase which allow small customization options. Once you’ve designed or customized your Geofilter, the next step is getting it approved.

Each Geofilter must meet submission guidelines and has to be approved by Snapchat. The submission requirements are:

  1. Upload a 1080 wide x 1920 tall web-optimized .PNG.
  2. It must be creative and fun. Snapchat wants the Geofilter to be something that your followers will use.
  3. There can be no contact information like URLs, hashtags, or social media handles.

The last step is to decide where and for how long you want your Geofilter to be available. If we use my wedding as an example, I chose to have my filter available for anyone in the building where I had my reception (an area of 155,254 Sq. Ft.). I chose to have it available for a specific amount of time – from the beginning of my social hour to the end of the dance (4 PM to 12 AM). The amount of time and the size of the area are the two factors that determine the cost of the Geofilter.

See your results

Once your campaign is finished, you’re able to see some basic metrics about the performance of your Geofilter. As of right now, Snapchat allows you to see how many people swiped and viewed your filter along with the number of people who actually used it in a snap. Below are the metrics of how my Geofilter performed for my wedding.

Start Snapping

I wanted to use a Snapchat Geofilter for my wedding because it was a fun and unique way for all my friends to share their experiences through Snapchat. If you’re a part of a business that’s curious about whether or not Snapchat is a platform that you should be using, testing out a Geofilter is an easy and cost effective way to introduce yourself to the platform.
